Plath's mother counseled her in a letter to follow these precepts ("You are a child of the universe, no less than the trees and stars; you have a right to be here.") And the guidance was so important to Joan Crawford that it was read at her 1977 memorial service. So maybe I should pay attention.

...With all its sham, drudgery, and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be careful. Strive to be happy.
