Tiffanie Turnbull 09/02/2022...NSW public hospital nurses will strike for the first time in almost a decade, as frustrations over understaffing, pay and conditions boil over. Votes on industrial action are still underway in some branches, but the NSW Nurses and Midwives' Association's says a majority have endorsed the industrial action.

Thousands of nurses will walk off the job for up to 24 hours in a statewide strike on Tuesday, says the union, which represents 48,000 nurses in NSW public hospitals. We don't recommend industrial action lightly,

NSWNMA General Secretary Brett Holmes said on Wednesday. We can't return to pre-COVID-19 staffing levels when we were already in crisis. The Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in Sydney is considering a full day strike, while nurses at Westmead and Cumberland hospitals will likely strike for 12 hours. Click here AAP

Covid-19: Countdown cans restrictions on goods for now

09/02/2022...There seems to be different approaches taken by supermarkets over limited sales of some products, with Countdown not having any in place on products apart from Panadol and Ibuprofen.

Countdown says it can bring in restrictions on products in a matter of hours if needed. Finance Minister Grant Robertson has already warned that it is "inevitable" there will be some impact on the supply-chain as Omicron spreads in the community

So we're already sort of doing it, but nowhere near as impactful as it was last August when we had 3000 people away, so we closed nine stores in Auckland to kind of deal with it. So we can close stores, we can reduce hours, we can close the deli or the bakery, we can close down a particular aisle. Click here RNZ news

South Auckland primary schools consider onsite vaccination clinics

9:07 am today 09/02/2022..John Gerritsen, Reporter.  South Auckland primary schools are considering whether to host vaccine clinics to help vaccinate the region's 5 to 11-year-olds. Principals in the area say Counties Manukau DHB has asked them to allow vaccinations on their sites.

The lead principal of the Alfriston Kahui Ako or Community of Learning, Cathy Chalmers, said its eight member schools enrolled about 4500 children between them and were considering getting involved.

Even though they might have students at Randwick Park or Greenmeadows Intermediate or Alfriston College, they could just go to one of those schools. So we're kind of looking at having rolling events at all of the schools so that parents have more options of when's convenient for them and it just gives greater flexibility," she said. Calorie counting based on a flawed, obsolete science, experts say

10:45 am on 7 February 2022 By Simon Leo Brown and Annabelle Quince. The problem is 10 percent adds up pretty quickly. Ten percent is 200 calories of a 2000 calorie meal, 10 percent of 20,000 calories is 2000 calories.

It's still a popular way to approach losing weight, whether it be keeping below a certain calorie limit on fasting days or using an app to calculate "calories in" versus "calories out. But many leading experts are now calling for that to change.

They say calorie counting is based on flawed, obsolete science. And they say our obsession with the calorie has actually served to make us fatter. The history of the calorie is "complicated," University of South Carolina historian Allison Marsh said. The term calorie emerges on different continents at different times with different meanings," she tells ABC RN's Rear Vision.             Māori education system to be revamped

09/02/2022.. Work will start soon towards a revamp of Māori education, aimed at connecting more tamariki with their language and culture, the government says. Associate education minister Kelvin Davis said he wanted 30 percent of Māori learners participating in Kura Kaupapa or other Māori medium education by 2040.

That would see 60,000 more Māori learners, 3500 fluent kaiako and 250 more kura, Davis said. The coming months will see talks with sector stakeholders and iwi to create a system Davis said would be built with, for, and delivered by Māori.

The Kaupapa Māori Education pathway has been hard fought for by many that have come before us," he said in a statement. But it has existed inside an education system that was not built for it, and therefore, cannot fully deliver on the aspirations Māori hold for the way we educate our future generations. Tahiti party asks supporters to abstain from voting in French presidential election

10:27 am today 09/02/2022..French Polynesia's pro-independence Tavini Huiraatira party has suggested to its supporters to abstain from voting in the French presidential election in April.

Its leader Oscar Temaru said voters are free to choose but he says none of the candidates represents French Polynesia's interests. He said his party's agreement with the Socialist Party of Francois Hollande had turned out to be a bad adventure because the French side had failed to deliver on its promises.

The Tavini will however contest the election for the territory's three seats in the French National Assembly in June, and it has nominated the youngest candidate to date. Temata'i Le Gayic, who is 21-years-old, will stand in the first electorate, which includes Papeete.. Click here RNZ news

Avril Lavigne poses in thigh-high boots and bralette as she shares new heartbreak

hello, Gemma Strong 09/02/2022..The 37-year-old singer admitted she had been forced to make a "difficult decision" as she addressed her fans in the UK and Europe. She wrote: "To my fans in Europe and the UK, I have some unfortunate news to share with you about my UK and European dates.

I have to make the difficult decision to postpone this tour until 2023. Due to the ongoing issues surrounding the pandemic, there are a series of travel and venue restrictions from country to country that have made the tour not possible to happen.

Avril continued: "It's not an easy decision, but it's one that will help ensure that we are able to play every single date of the tour, put on the best show possible at full capacity, and operate in a safe environment. It really breaks my heart to have to do this, but I know it will be worth the wait. Click here Hello

Bill to ban conversion therapy passes second reading

08/02/2022...A rainbow flag flies outside Parliament. Conversion therapy involves attempts to change a person's sexual orientation or gender. All parties except National block voted in favour of the bill.National's leader Christopher Luxon announced in the lead up to the bill that his MPs would be able to vote with their conscience.

In total, 26 of National's MPs voted for the bill and seven voted against it. The select committee heard oral submissions from 837 submitters in total, made up of 716 individuals and 121 organisations.

Among the concerns raised were that parents could be criminalised. However, the select committee found that "conversations between parents and children would not be criminalised under the offence in clause 8. We believe that the standard for a behaviour to be considered a conversion practice in the bill is appropriately high. Click here RNZ news

Te Pāti Māori calls for removal of UK royals as head of state

08/02/2022...Te Pāti Māori co-leaders Rawiri Waititi and Debbie Ngarewa-Packer. It also calls for a constitution centred on Te Tiriti o Waitangi, which would include a Māori parliament and returning land to iwi and hapū.

Co-leader Rawiri Waititi said the Crown has failed in its duty of care, and the country is ready to relieve them of that duty. The Crown are intent on 'settling' Te Tiriti because they are unwilling to honour it. What we've had until now is a one-sided relationship, completely defined by the Crown," he said.

This is an opportunity to rebalance the scales of power in Aotearoa. To create an Aotearoa that respects the mana of papatūanuku and her descendants, and leaves no one behind", said co-leader Debbie Ngarewa-Packer. Click here RNZ new

No plan to lower petrol excise tax despite $3 pain at pump

Jamie Ensor 08/02/2022...The Government is not considering lowering the petrol excise duty despite motorists feeling pain at the pump as prices cross $3 a litre at some stores.

A quick scan of 91 petrol prices on price-tracking app Gaspy in Wellington show prices surpassing $2.80 a litre. For 95, it's closing in on $3, with Z Miramar and Z Broadway both charging $2.99 a litre. In Auckland, which has a 10 cent regional fuel tax, premium petrol is getting as high as $3.07.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern is putting this largely down to international factors affecting the cost of Crude oil, such as tensions between Russia and Ukraine, supply chain issues and companies moving towards renewable fuels. A barrel currently costs US$91, up 15 percent in January alone, with prices over the last week among the highest since 2014. Click here News-hub

National Party calls for Auckland regional fuel tax to be scrapped as prices rise

08/02/2022...The National Party is calling for the regional fuel tax in Auckland to be scrapped to give motorists some relief in the face of skyrocketing prices. National Party leader Chris Luxon says the government should also rein in its own spending, and consider other measures like congestion pricing.

That imposes an extra 10 cents a litre at the pump - about a further 70 cents per litre across the country also goes to the government as excise tax. Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said the prices were being driven up by global conditions, and other than the work done by the Commerce Commission, there was no plan to directly intervene.

Lowering the excise tax, even temporarily, was not something the government "has given consideration to", Ardern said. National Party leader Chris Luxon said the first thing to go should be the regional fuel tax Click here RNZ news

Ice hockey referee leaves rink covered in blood after being hit in face by stick at Winter Olympics

Daniel Moxon 09/02/2022..An ice hockey referee was forced to leave the rink in a match at the Winter Olympics with blood streaming from her face after being accidentally whacked by a stick.

Cianna Lieffers was one of the officials in charge of the match between Team USA and Canada – two global powerhouses of the game with a rivalry stretching back more than 20 years. With that in mind she might have expected to have to deal with some needle between the two great rivals.

What she probably didn't anticipate was being the victim of an accidental whack from American player Amanda Kessel, whose wayward stick caught Lieffers right in the face. A cloth she was using to apply pressure to her wound was covered in blood as she made her way off the ice, before cameras later picked up a nasty. Click here Mirror

Climate change: Top companies exaggerating their progress - study

8:44 pm on 7 February 2022 ...Many of the world's biggest companies are failing to meet their own targets on tackling climate change, according to a study of 25 corporations. They also routinely exaggerate or misreport their progress, the New Climate Institute report says. Google, Amazon, Ikea, Apple and Nestle are among those failing to change quickly enough.

Corporations are under pressure to cut their environmental impact as more consumers want green products. Some of the companies told BBC News they disagreed with some of the methods used in the report and said they were committed to taking action to curb climate change.

The firms analysed account for 5 percent of global greenhouse-gas emissions, the report says - which means although they have a huge carbon footprint. "We set these ambitious targets because we know that climate change is a serious problem, and action is needed now more than ever. As part of our goal to reach net-zero carbon by 2040, Amazon is on a path to powering our operations with 100 percent renewable energy by 2025. Click here RNZ news
